Measuring adhesion of cold spray coatings to substrates, or the cohesive strength within a coating is difficult and requires spraying significant amounts of powder. We developed a technique known as "splat adhesion testing" that can measure adhesive properties for a single cold sprayed particle on a substrate. This technique has been applied to metal-metal and metal-ceramic interfaces. The "splat adhesion strength" measured from this technique has been correlated to degree of recrystallization at metal-metal interfaces and nanoscale chemical reactions at metal-ceramic interfaces.
